September 4th, 2016 Dear LIUFF Colleagues, Over the past few days, you have been barraged by letters from the Administration’s negotiating team.  These letters have been, quite frankly, baffling—a mixture of lecturing us about how good we have it, bragging about their generosity towards us, and bullying, first with the threat of docked pay and cancelled benefits and then by informing us that we are locked out as of Saturday at midnight. They also contain a more insidious message, one that they have been sharing with students in an effort to turn them against the faculty:  that there is a direct connection between treating faculty fairly and tuition increases and that if faculty really cared about students they would take the Administration’s offer. Strike authorization vote passes unanimously...

The LIUFF Executive Committee organized a meeting for the general membership on May 2, 2016 to discuss whether to affirm the right of the committee to call for a strike vote in the event that a fair contract cannot be bargained by the end of the current contract year. Faculty expressed continuing concerns and frustrations about issues related to salary parity, full and part-time faculty benefits, and the need for the university to bargain in good faith with the LIUFF negotiating team. LIUFF General Membership Meeting – Strike Authorization Vote Monday, May 2, 3 – 5 pm., LLC 122 What is a strike authorization vote? First, we are not voting to strike. A “yes” vote simply means that the membership has given the Executive Committee the authority to recommend a strike vote when our contract expires, and it gives us permission to file the requisite paperwork with the state. At the end of August, there will be a ratification meeting at which the entire membership will have the opportunity to vote on whether to accept the contract offer on the table or to go on strike.
