Fall 2019- LIUFF President Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

Happy Labor Day!   Welcome back to the 2019 fall term.  The LIUFF leadership began anew this June with an invigorated executive committee.  We have already begun our important work to address the LIUFF Trust Fund for adjunct healthcare and to form an election committee.  LIUFF will be running an election this month to fill vacant officer positions (Grievance and Vice President).

While vigilantly enforcing our collectively bargained contract this summer we have successfully fought the Administration on several fronts.  These include:

1.Stopping the Administration from instituting yet another iteration of a workload policy prorating full-time and adjunct faculty pay based on the # of students in a class.  The Administration has admitted this policy is unenforceable.   They stood down.  We won!

2.Stopping the Administration from advertising faculty positions in the Health Sciences as 12 month positions.  All teaching faculty in Brooklyn hold 9 month contracts.  If we teach or supervise over the summer months beyond our regular load, this work must be compensated.  Again, they stood down.  We won!

3.Stopping the Administration from mistakenly denying health insurance coverage to the child of faculty member.  The dependent is in his 20s, and based on the Affordable Care Act, can and should be maintained on a parental policy upon request.  (If you have changed your dependent care coverage within the last year, please check with your healthcare insurer to make sure your dependent coverage is accurate).  Once more, the Administration stood down. We won!

The LIUFF leadership has also filed a grievance against the hiring of a Senior Academic Officer without faculty consultation.   We seek a process that results in the productive engagement of faculty in the selection of candidates for critical leadership roles.  We will continue to fight to ensure that students and faculty remain the core of the University.

As the past few months have shown us, our unity is our strength. The challenges we face can in fact be our greatest opportunities for collective action.  Join us at the table.  We look forward to working with all of you and to a productive year ahead.

In solidarity,

Maria McGarrity

President, LIUFF
