Adjunct Benefit Trust Fund information

 

The LIU Faculty Federation has established a Benefit Trust Fund (ABTF) to financially assist adjunct faculty who have a history of service to LIU and who pay their entire health care premium.

To qualify for assistance from the LIUFF ABTF, an adjunct must be a current LIU Brooklyn employee, must be an LIUFF member or agency fee payer on the rolls as of August 31, 2016, and must provide proof that he/she has:

  1. taught 36 credits as an adjunct and as an LIUFF dues-payer between September 1, 2011, and August 31, 2016, at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University and has taught at LIU Brooklyn in at least 4 of these 5 academic years;
  2. coverage by a health insurance policy (provide policy # and proof of purchase*);
  3. no full or partially subsidized coverage, or has not already received reimbursement for health insurance premiums, through another job, a spouse/partner’s employer, or any other source.

This year, the trust fund board has authorized spending up to $80,000 on stipends.  The amount available to each qualifying adjunct will be determined by the total number of applicants who meet the above criteria and in no case will exceed the amount of the annual premium for individual coverage. Family and spouse/partner coverage are not available for funding from the ABTF.  Money received through the LIUFF ABTF may be considered taxable income.

We invite any adjuncts who met the above criteria to submit the requisite information Michael Pelias (Philosophy) or Melissa Antinori (Pratt 310) by November 18, 2016.  Monies will be available for distribution no later than January 15, 2017.

*Open enrollment for LIU-sponsored plans occurs during November each year for a plan effective date of January 1 of the following calendar year; the 2016 open enrollment period ends November 23, 2016.  If you are enrolling in a plan for the first time this year, you must advise us that you have enrolled and show proof of enrollment before money will be distributed to you.  Please contact the Benefits Office for details.  Neither the LIUFF nor the Adjunct Benefit Trust Fund administers the insurance plans.
